The Jones Act

Professional Mariners & Commercial Fishing Accident

If you were injured while working as a member of a crew aboard a vessel, including blue water seaman, brown water seaman, commercial fishing or any sore of professional mariner work, you are covered under the Jones Act and the General Maritime Law. Generally, when you are injured while working at sea, you are not entitled to workers compensation benefits. Instead you are considered a Jones Act Seaman and are entitled to have your employer (or the vessel owner) pay you maintenance (living expenses while injured), cure (medical benefits) and wages until the end of the voyage.
