Truck hits overpass on Hutchinson River Parkway in Pelham By Michael Joseph on February 19, 2021

A box truck hit an overpass on the Hutchinson River Parkway, in Westchester County New York, snarling traffic for hours. Our Westchester county truck accident lawyers know that this is not the first time that a truck has hit an overpass on a Westchester County parkway.  There is no word yet if the driver is facing any charges.

Many of the truck drivers that occupy the roadways are required to travel far distances to drop off the cargo they are hauling. That means they will likely encounter roadways they have never driven on and through areas they aren’t quite familiar with. Now, because there are certain roads that do not permit large trucks to operate on, it is important for a truck driver to use the proper GPS system that is expected to help steer them in the right direction so that they avoid taking these roads. They should also be following the warning signs provided that indicate there is a low-lying bridge up ahead as it is sometimes impossible for a large truck to fit under it. New York state law, for decades has restricted the use of its parkways and prohibited commercial trucks from using parkways. This is because the design features of parkways are not appropriate for large commercial trucks and increase the danger of an accident. Parkways, which are designed to have a park like fell, have narrower lanes, compared to highways, and have more curves, as well as lower bridges and overpasses. Too often, commercial truck drivers, fail to appreciate there  dangers.  Unfortunately, there are times when truck operators fail to take the necessary steps to avoid a road or highway that may have bridges with low clearances which then leads to a wreck occurring.

The truck driver might be required to pay fines and fees for colliding with the bridge. When a truck collides into a low-lying overpass or bridge, it is likely the impact caused a significant amount in damage. Not only might the officer who responded to the call issue a ticket, but the employer may also require you to pay a fine for the damage you caused the vehicle to sustain. Also if a truck driver causes an accident on a road, they should not have been on in the first place, our Westchester county truck accident lawyers know that the truck driver and the trucking company can be sued for personal injureis from the accident.

This is not the first time that a truck has hit a parkway overpass. For example in January, 2021, a truck in Scarsdale hit an overpass on a parkway. Also on the Hutchinson parkway, in June, 2018, a truck hit an overpass, which caused its freight of chickens to be thrown all over the parkway.

If you or a family member suffered personal injuries in a truck accident on a Westchester County parkway, call our Westchester county truck accident laweyrs for a free consultations. New York law alllows victims of  truck collisions to file personal injury lawsuits against the operators of large trucks.
